Ile du Gaou partially closes off the Brusc lagoon. Indeed, along the port of Le Brusc, Ile du Gaou is reached by a bridge spanning the Isthmus of Gaou, the passage between the Mediterranean and the lagoon of Le Brusc. The bridge is adorned with a statue, "La venus sortant des flots", by Robert Forrer.
It is possible to cross from the Ile du Petit Gaou to the Ile du Grand Gaou via a footbridge over a small inlet, the "Petit Pas du Coq".
The greatest length of the Grand Gaou is 600 meters, with a maximum width of around 250 meters. It's all the more astonishing to have so many viewpoints from this "little island": the roadstead and bay of Sanary and Six Fours les Plages, Le Gros Cerveau, Le Bau de Quatre Oure, Mont Caume, the hill and fort of Six Fours. This is the "Grand Pas du Coq" or "Détroit du Grand Gaou" which separates Le Gaou from the Archipel des Embiez
